Cosmic Ray Streaming in the Turbulent Interstellar Medium

نویسندگان

چکیده

We study the streaming instability of GeV$-100~$GeV cosmic rays (CRs) and its damping in turbulent interstellar medium (ISM). find that is dominated by ion-neutral collisional weakly ionized molecular clouds, highly warm medium, nonlinear Landau Galactic halo. Only halo, speed CRs close to Alfv\'{e}n speed. Alfv\'{e}nic turbulence plays an important role both suppressing regulating diffusion via magnetic field line tangling, with effective mean free path observer frame determined scale super-Alfv\'{e}nic turbulence. The resulting coefficient sensitive Mach number, which has a large range values multi-phase ISM. Super-Alfv\'{e}nic contributes additional confinement CRs, irrespective dominant mechanism.

Cosmic Ray Ionization of the Interstellar Medium

We consider a cosmic ray spectrum that is a power law in momentum down to a cutoff and derive a lower cutoff corresponding to Ekin ∼ (30− 60) MeV from the observed ionization rates in nearby diffuse clouds. While the real spectra of cosmic rays may not be so simple, we argue that one expects a substantial change in the spectra at such energies and that, at first approximation, a power law spect...

Structure Function Studies for Turbulent Interstellar Medium

We study structure functions of rotation measures in the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) region and the North Galactic Pole (NGP) to extract the interstellar medium (ISM) fluctuation information. The CGPS data are divided into three longitude intervals: 82 < l < 96 (CGPS1), 115 < l < 130 (CGPS2) and 130 < l < 146 (CGPS3). The structure functions of all three regions have large uncertainti...

The energy spectrum of cosmic ray protons in the local interstellar medium

A number of analyses of cosmic gamma ray data from the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory have found that the energy spectra are flatter than would have been expected if the spectra of protons in the producing regions were of the same shape as that measured at earth. Although it is true that technical artifacts could be responsible a variety of arguments to be advanced here make us conclude that the...

Cosmic-Ray Spectra in Interstellar Space

At energies below ~300 MeV/nuc our knowledge of cosmic-ray spectra outside the heliosphere is obscured by the energy loss that cosmic rays experience during transport through the heliosphere into the inner solar system. This paper compares measurements of secondary electron-capture isotope abundances and cosmic-ray spectra from ACE with a simple model of interstellar propagation and solar modul...

Wave Damping by Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence and Its Effect on Cosmic-ray Propagation in the Interstellar Medium

Cosmic rays scatter off magnetic irregularities (Alfvén waves) with which they are resonant, that is, waves of wavelength comparable to their gyroradii. These waves may be generated either by the cosmic rays themselves, if they stream faster than the Alfvén speed, or by sources of MHD turbulence. Waves excited by streaming cosmic rays are ideally shaped for scattering, whereas the scattering ef...
